City to get 914 more public parking slots

Parking lots to come up at Lower Parel and Saki Naka.

The city will soon get an additional 45,000 sq metres of parking space — specifically 689 parking slots in central Mumbai (Lower Parel), and 225 in the western suburbs (Saki Naka).

This is because the civic body is all set to take possession of two parking lots from private builders under a policy to give more buildable area in exchange of public parking lots under rule 33 (24) of the development control (DC) regulations.

Aseem Gupta, additional municipal commissioner, said: “Both parking lots will be in our possession in a week's time.”

“All the parking space is for light motor vehicles (four-wheelers),” said a senior civic official from the roads department who did not wish to be named.

According to policy 33 (24), which was originally introduced in 2008, new construction on a plot over 1,000 sq metres in the island city and over 2,000 sq metres in the suburbs would get additional floor space index up to 4 if the developer agrees to build public parking lots and hand them over to the civic body for free.

Responding to this, over 70 developers approached the civic body to avail benefits from the scheme in 2008. Of these, 11 were issued commencement certificates (CC) to start work, while 15 developers got letters of intent (LOI) from the civic body.
