Besides usual methods such as rainwater harvesting, recycling water and digging bore wells for non-potable use, the civic body has now made it compulsory for new constructions to have a dual-flush system, which will save more than 60 per cent of water used for toilet purpose in the city.

The municipal officials said they would soon start an awareness campaign so that residents in the older buildings also adopt such systems.

“The dual-flush system will save lots of water. The amount of water flushed will be customised according to the use. This will lead to less wastage," chief hydraulic engineer V.S. Deshpande said.

“We have made this mandatory for all new constructions, and are now planning to create awareness among the all citizens so that residents of older buildings too could shift to this system,” he added.
