Civic body issues notices to 13 food hawkers

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Licence Department, on Tuesday and Thursday, issued notices to 13 food hawkers on Saraswati Road, Tagore Road at Santacruz and near National College, Khar under section 516 AAA of the BMC Act.

Under this section, the BMC requests the concerned police station to take action against the hawkers.

“We have conducted several drives against food hawkers, but they still return. Therefore, this time we have requested the police to do the needful. We have issued notices to the hawkers and a copy of it has been sent to the Santacruz and Khar police stations,” said an official from Licence department H/ West ward requesting anonymity because he is not authorised to talk to the media.

An official from the Khar Police Station, on condition of anonymity, because he is not authorised to talk to the media, said, “So far, we have taken action under the Bombay Police Act 33(w) 22-51 against seven hawkers. They have been penalised for Rs5,000 and all their equipment has been confiscated.”

“Many accidents have occurred because of the hawkers on the footpath forcing people to walk on the roads. In the last six months, we have struggled to get rid of this problem but we are receiving very little co-operation from civic officials,” said Saurabh Jhaveri, Santacruz Residents Welfare Association Authority.
