Civic body’s new plan(t) for water-starved city

The unprecedented water crisis in the city that might elevate in the near future has prompted the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to chalk out an alternative plan for the parched city, reports HT Correspondent.

The BMC has decided to set up desalination plants at different places in the city in the next one year.

Desalination is a process of removing soluble salts from water to render it suitable for drinking and other industrial use. Mumbai has a vast coastline and this project will help meet the increasing demand for water. “We have asked the consultant to survey a few places in the city where these plants can be set up,” said Anil Diggikar, Additional Municipal Commissioner.

Areas in Borivili, Kandivili, Colaba, Navy Nagar, Versova and near Chembur will be surveyed for feasibility to set up desalination plants there. “There is always a water shortage in these areas and hence setting up a desalination plant here will act as a future investment,” said Diggikar.

The BMC feels that the exercise would help in equitable distribution of water and in the fair implementation of the water cut. “We will put this system in place in 10 days,” said Diggikar.

The BMC supplies water to 113 zones at different times throughout the day. Diggikar also added that the civic body would meet corporators and water department engineers from different wards to study water problems in those areas.
