The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will purchase at least two of the seven plots, which were earmarked as open spaces or public utility spaces.

The civic improvements committee decided on Friday that the plot at Juhu village in Andheri and the one at Malad would be purchased. The fate of the other five plots will be decided after inspections by the committee.

The seven open spaces — five from Andheri and one each from Malad and Dahisar — cover an area of about 36,930 sq mtr. Purchase of all seven plots is likely to cost the civic body Rs 89 crore.

The plot at Juhu village in Andheri has been reserved for a park whereas the one at Malad has been earmarked for a recreation ground (RG). The two plots together cover an area of 2,560 sq mtr, and will cost the BMC Rs 13.23 crore. “We have visited both plots and unanimously decided to purchase them,” said Bhalchandra Shirsat, chairman of the civic improvements committee. However, a formal nod from the general body will be required before the purchase is executed.

According to the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning (MRTP) act, a plot reserved for public amenities should be acquired by the local corporation for development as per the reservation mentioned in development plan (DP) within 10 years of approval of city's town planning. The owner can serve a notice to the corporation under section 126 of the MRTP and ask the civic body to purchase the plot. If the corporation does not purchase the plot, the reservation would lapse.

Purchase notice for the Juhu plot was served in May this year, while that for the Malad plot was served in February, giving the committee enough time to decide. The deadline for acquisition of the Dahisar plot, however, lapses in December.
