The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to enlist active citizen support in its drive to check water leakage and contamination, by issuing appeals to Mumbaiites to promptly inform them about the same.

“The plan is to popularise any of the existing civic hotlines and ensure that citizens inform us of any leakages or cases of contamination that arise out of these leakages. This will ensure that cases our officials miss will be brought to our notice,” said a senior civic official who did not wish to be named, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

Additional municipal commissioner Rajiv Jalota said: “We will try to resolve all cases of leakages and contamination in 24 to 48 hours. Along with this, a daily report on the progress of these cases, as well as any new instances of leakages and detection, will have to be submitted to senior civic officials. Many cases require constant follow-up with departments like the sewerage department, in case the contamination occurs from their line. Hence, the daily progress of the complaints will have to be submitted to us.”

A senior civic official said: “Instead of limiting the drive to a fortnight, we have decided to carry on the programme for longer so that it helps us address the problem of contamination, especially during the monsoons, more effectively.”
