CM meets citizens’ body for the first time

Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan met the Citizen Action Group (CAG) for the first time on Monday. The CAG is a committee of prominent citizens set up to externally monitor the progress of the government to transform Mumbai into a world-class city.

Members raised the issue of clean and 24-hour water supply and expressed concerns over water contamination.

At the meeting, the state environment department with the help of CAG submitted an environment mission before Chavan to kick-start a drive to curb pollution and make the city more environmentally friendly.

The presentation made by state environment secretary Valsa Nair Singh called for a separate state law to conserve mangroves, upgradation of sewage treatment plants, plugging leakages in water supply, noise mapping for the city and creation of more open spaces.

The mission calls for a separate mangrove protection act, which clearly lays down heavy penalty, revocation of licenses and compensatory afforestation to punish the guilty. It also called for setting up of more air quality and noise monitoring stations across the city to capture data on existing pollution levels.
