As Prithviraj Chavan completes one year as Maharashtra chief minister today, a panel of experts assessing his performance has rated him high for his efforts to curb corruption in the state.
The general perception, though, remains that the CM, who has lived up to most expectations, is wary of taking controversial decisions. Chavan took over as CM last year after his predecessor Ashok Chavan had to step down following the Adarsh scam.
An experts’ panel of HT gave Chavan the maximum number of marks for his efforts to clean up governance and root out corruption. He scored 7.66 points on a scale of 1 to 10.
He lost points for not attracting investment in the state and lack of industrial growth and law and order, where he scored a mere 4.66 points each. The experts gave Chavan 5 points each on two other parameters — Mumbai makeover, and power.
Talking to HT, Chavan said he would continue to be transparent in making policies. The CM said he did not mind if his approach delayed things.
Although the Opposition parties said he was the “most ineffective CM in recent times”, Chavan described the past year as eventful and politically exciting. Insisting that he would not work for individual benefits, the CM said he would like the state to retain its position as the favourite investment destination.
