Committee to fix loopholes in scheme

To fill loopholes in the newly introduced system, the transport department - along with RTO officers - has formed a committee. The committee will also include officials from the Indian Post.

The scheme of sending permanent licences, driving licences and car registrations by speed post was launched as a pilot project at the Tardeo RTO on April 2.

Agents protested against the scheme, introduced with the objective to verify addresses and reduce the number of unauthorised agents. There were protests against the increasing number of undelivered licenses as well.

According to Madhukar Jadhav, RTO Tardeo, this committee will actively solve the problems that the transport department is facing about the scheme.

“We have already given consent to blood relatives to accept the candidate’s licence in his/her absence. The candidate can also get the licence by showing a photo ID,” said Jadhav.

From the 13,000 licences delivered by the Tardeo RTO till date, 1,900 have come back.

“This is because many of the addresses given are wrong,” said Jadhav.

Currently, the scheme is being undertaken at RTOs in Wadala, Thane and Andheri.
