The constable, Pramod Vinayak Patil, attached to the Bandra chowkie of the Mumbai traffic police, is recuperating

at Lilavati Hospital, the police said.

The 38-year-old driver, Dhondiram Malaji Chavan, who is originally from Pune, was arrested immediately after the accident for rash driving and causing grievous hurt by act endangering life of others, the police said.

Patil, according to the police, was at the toll counter near the Bandra-end of the sea link to relieve a colleague when the incident occurred.

“After relieving his colleague around 3.20pm, Patil was turning his motorcycle around when Chavan’s speeding Indigo hit him. Chavan, who was coming from the Bandra-end of the sea link, was trying to overtake a vehicle in front of him and swerved into the wrong lane in the process,” said an official from Bandra police station, on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media.

The police said the force of the crash threw Patil off his bike. He was immediately rushed to Bhabha hospital by passing motorists and his colleague, the police added.

“Patil was later shifted to Lilavati Hospital because of the seriousness of his injuries. He has suffered injuries on his left knee and lower back. Doctors have said his condition is stable and is being monitored,” the official added.

Chavan, the police said, was not driving under the influence of alcohol.
