Mahendra Patel, 62, had lodged a complaint against his house help, Ranjana Balunj, alleging that she had stolen diamond jewellery worth Rs 3.77 lakh and Rs1.35 lakh cash from his cupboard while he was away on November 6.

Mehta had told the police that he found that the lock of the cupboard was broken and jewellery and cash missing from it. He lodged a complaint against Balunj as she was the only one to have entered his house in his absence.

“During the course of interrogation, we found out that Balunj was not involved in the crime. She didn’t even know about the theft unless her employer and later the police questioned her,” said a police officer from Parksite police station.
