The police on Monday registered a case of rape and murder after they found the body of a 13-year-old girl in a river in Vasai. As of now, the police have not identified any suspects.

Police said the post-mortem report confirmed that she was raped and then hit by a heavy object on the head, which caused her death. The victim, a Class 8 student of Holy Cross School in Nalasopara, had gone for a hiking camp with 150 scouts and guides on Friday morning to Tungareshwar.
In the evening, when a head count was done, the group realised that the victim, the daughter of a rickshaw driver, was missing.
She was found unclothed in the river with blood gushing out of her head. "The group told us she had been wearing a tracksuit, which was missing," said a police officer. The police have recorded statements of the group members, but have not got any leads so far.
