The creators of the iconic Lalbaugcha Raja have ensured that the idol retains its one-of-a-kind status from this year's Ganeshotsav.

The creators of the iconic Lalbaugcha Raja have ensured that the idol retains its one-of-a-kind status from this year's Ganeshotsav.

On Thursday evening, Santosh Kambli, artist and owner of Kambli Arts, which has been making the Lalbaugcha Raja idol since 1935, received a diary number, the first step towards having a copyright for his creation.

"There are instances of people making illegal replicas of the God without prior permission from us. With the copyright, it will be possible to take the offenders to court," said Kambli, who has started moulding the 12-foot idol for the festival that begins on September 1.

"For the last three generations, my family has been involved in crafting the idol of the elephant-god. Every year, the face and expression of the Lord remains the same, but we change his pose on his singhasan (throne)," said Kambli.
