A special service will run from CST to Kurla at 11.30pm on Saturday night as part of the farewell to the iconic yellow-and-maroon direct current (DC) suburban local trains, which, after serving the city for more than 90 years, will become history from Sunday. To be part of the ride, you will, however, have to shell out Rs10,000 for the 45-minute journey. The amount collected will be given for drought relief.

Along with the nostalgic journey of the DC rake, people will also get to witness live work on conversion to 25,000 volt AC traction from 1,500 DC and green flag the first AC local (alternate current) from CST at 6am. (HT File)

The authorities want railway enthusiasts and fans to participate in the farewell in large numbers, but are sceptical of the response owing to the prices, IPL match and late night run of the train.

Along with the nostalgic journey of the DC rake, people will also get to witness live work on conversion to 25,000 volt AC traction from 1,500 DC and green flag the first AC local (alternate current) from CST at 6am.

On February 3, 1925, the first electric local ran between CST and Kurla on the Harbour line, marking the beginning of electrification of railways in India. Alternate current (AC) traction has now become a reality in all parts of India, except on the harbour and trans-harbour line. The railways have now adopted the powerful alternate current traction even on the Harbour line, which according to railway officials has historic significance, as it will eliminate DC traction forever.

Sood said participants can also get their mannequins made by the students at a token price. The mannequins could be used to decorate the coaches of the last DC train. “Three coaches of the DC train will be preserved at the Delhi-based National Rail Museum, one at Carnac Bunder, one at Thane and remain coaches at other important stations,” said Sood.
