The girls were travelling on the LTT-Gorakhpur Express and were on their way to Nepal. Some of the frightened girls had to be pulled out of the crowded compartment through the emergency window.

VA Malegaonkar, CPRO, Central Railway, said, "Our commercial department is conducting an inquiry. The ticket checkers on this train are being questioned about the encroachment by unauthorised commuters."

The waiting list booking for this train had apparently crossed 1,200 on Thursday. "Passengers desperate to return to their native places after Chhath Puja and Diwali vacation had crowded the train. Those who could not get their tickets confirmed boarded the reserved compartments resulting in inconvenience to other passengers," a Central Railway official said.

Railway authorities said unauthorised commuters had barged into this train from Thane, because at LTT, the train had left without event. "From the information we received, a few girls got out of the train at Igatpuri, four of them returned to Mumbai and a few were accommodated on the Pawan Express that was following this train," Malegaonkar added.
