Bhartiya Gauvansha Rakshan Samvardhan Parishad, an animal welfare NGO, had moved court stating that the police were not taking action against illegal slaughter of cows in Madampura and Mominpura, which fall under the jurisdiction of the Nagpada and Agripada police station.

The petition claimed the police did not took cognisance of the complaint they had filed about illegal hoarding of animals at these places.

The NGO then approached the metropolitan magistrate’s court which passed a search and seizure order on November 2. However, no action was taken pursuant to this order, the petition said.

The court was informed that the commissioner of animal husbandry and the home department had issued circulars laying down guideline regarding slaughter of animals after inspection and examination during Eid under the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Vacation judge justice Roshan Dalvi asked the NGO to inform the police commissioner and the corporation about the circulars.

“The court has asked us to provide the court order and the act to the police and the civic body so that steps can be taken to curb illegal slaughter,” said petitioner’s advocate Omprakash Jha.

The case has been adjourned till November 14.
