Cut-offs for admissions to junior colleges dropped marginally by two to three percentage points from the first general merit list. The second general merit list (for arts, science and commerce) was declared at 10.30 pm on Thursday night. Admissions began on Friday. About 51,000 students have got admission in the second list.

“The first general merit list overlapped with the bifocal list. Now, that the bifocal admissions are over, this list is more reflective of the real general list cut-offs,” said Suhas Pednekar, principal of Ramnarain Ruia College at Matunga. Colleges are not too sure how many seats will be left for a third general merit list.

“We have only 40 seats left. If these are filled in the next few days, then there will not be a third list,” said Harsha Mehta, principal, SIES College at Sion. At HR College, too, there are only 85 commerce seats remaining, so a third list seems unlikely.

While commerce and science streams saw a marginal drop in cut-offs, in some colleges the arts cut-offs feel by almost 20 percentage points. “The demand for arts is extremely low this year and there are 14,000 seats vacant across colleges even after the second list,” said an official from the education department.

Though students could pay their fees on Friday, admission queues were not too long in colleges. For example, at Ruparel College only 70 out of 303 students of the second list turned up on Friday for provisional admissions. St. Xavier’s College has asked students to come only on Monday because of their ongoing college festival, Malhar.

Students, whose names have appeared in the second merit list, can secure admission at colleges on August 21 and 23 between 10 am and 2pm. The third list will be released on August 23 at 5 pm.
