“If anything happens to my daughter, I will ensure that the driver of the car is punished for what he has done,” said an injured Santosh Sawant, whose daughter Bhoomi is admitted to the critical care unit of the Zynova hospital in Ghatkopar.

Sawant, who owns a shop in the Bhatwadi area of Ghatkopar where the incident took place, also sustained injuries as he tried to protect his daughter from the Zen Estilo coming at them at high speed.

“The driver [Babban Sakaram Chikne, 48] was not only irresponsible in driving the way he did, but he did not even ensure that we were rushed to the hospital after what he had done,” said Sawant. “Right now, however, I am not thinking about who is responsible. My top priority is the well-being of my daughter. I hope she recovers soon,” he added. Doctors at the hospital said that the condition of the five-year-old is stable.

Recounting the moments that led to the accident, Sawant said that he, along with Bhoomi, crossed the road together. Within a few moments, he saw a car charging towards his daughter and tried to save her, which resulted in an injury to his knee as well.

The other injured have been identified as Guddu Ahmed, 30, Lata Shejval, 42, Manojkumar Chaurasiya, 34, Varsha Gaikwad, 18, Priya Gaikwad, 16, Puja Gaikwad, 14, Pawan Rajput, 24, Dharmendra Gohil, 28, in addition to Bhoomi and her father.

The Ghatkopar police managed to track down Chikne from the Bhatwadi area on Saturday morning and arrested him. Chikne has been booked for causing grievous hurt by act endangering life and personal safety of others, rash and negligent driving, not helping those injured with medical attention, and not informing the police.

He was later released on bail of Rs5,000.
