The accused, who according to police, were under the influence of alcohol, allegedly attacked the policemen after the cops suspected them of having damaged a vehicle in the parking lot of the exhibition.

The policemen asked the accused to accompany them to the Powai police station, but the situation turned ugly as the accused chose to attack the police. While assistant police inspector A Pradhan got five stitches on his head, constable D Patil sustained severe injuries and two other policemen escaped with minor bruises. Three of the accused also sustained minor injuries.

“The incident took place around 11.40pm when a palmist Dr Rajkumar Bharadwaj, who had rented a stall at the handloom exhibition near Hiranandani, was leaving. He told his wife to wait at the exhibition gate as he went to get his car from the parking lot. In the parking lot, he realised that the rear side of his vehicle had been damaged. He called the police, who found around 8-10 people consuming alcohol in the parking lot. A duo – Balbir Manta Singh and Das Krishnan Nair – from the group spoke very rudely to the cops,” said Ashok Jadhav, senior inspector, Powai police station.

While the police tried to take the accused to the police station, the group abused the policemen, claiming that they were politically well connected, added the witness. “Thy then attacked the policemen,” said the witness.

The accused were charged with rioting and assault. “Along with Balbir Singh and Nair, we arrested Bharat Singh, Mohammad Shah, Sada Yadav and Ajay Rai. They have been remanded to police custody till December 6,” said Jadhav.
