A new institute exclusively dedicated to earthquake studies is set to come up in Karad, the hometown of chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and an area that experiences frequent seismic activity.
The collector’s office has already identified 100 acres of land for the new institute. Construction work is expected to start within six months.
The only other institute under the Central government’s ministry of earth sciences specifically dedicated to studying seismic activity is located in Hyderabad.
“Karad lies is a seismic-prone zone and we have even had mild tremors here recently, which is why this land is highly suitable for such an institute,” said N Ramaswami, collector of Satara district, where Karad is located.
Prithviraj Chavan was the union minister of state for science and technology before he took over as the chief minister of Maharashtra last November.
“We will be conducting deep drilling in certain places to study the movement of the earth’s various layers,” said Ramaswami.
He did not specify when the new institute would be ready, but said that they were in the final stages of allotting and demarcating the land for the institute. Till then, the government is looking for a temporary rented building to house the institute.
