The next time you are at an electronics shop, if the retail executive suggests you buy an energy-efficient yet expensive air conditioner don’t dismiss it as a marketing gimmick.

Experts say follow the executives’ advice because you will be assured of reduced electricity bills. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory undertaking of the Centre, will train retailers on how to save power. Dr Ajay Mathur, BEE managing director, said on Wednesday that energy efficiency had become relevant to every individual. “Our campaign will make consumers aware of the quantum of energy and financial savings.”
In Mumbai, the campaign will focus on star labelling air conditioners and other power guzzling appliances. The city’s power shortfall has been increasing by 10 per cent every year.
Emerson Climate Technologies (India) and International Copper Promotion Council (India) are BEE’s strategic partners in the initiative. Emerson will install kiosks at shops to help consumers calculate energy savings and financial gains.
BEE, in association with state power distribution company, Mahavitaran, will distribute energy efficient Shakti Pumps to 3,500 farmers in the state.
