Railway police statistics reveal that 160 women faced violence on local trains and across the 92 railway stations of Central and Western Railway until October this year, an average of 16 a month. These attacks include rapes, molestation, robberies, murders, chain snatchings and attempts to murder, the railway police said.

The Bombay high court pulled up the railway police earlier this year when it took notice of Hindustan Times reports highlighting the plight of women commuters, including the assault on a 25-year-old Nerul resident on June 19, converting them into a suo motu public interest litigation.
