After spending more than a month at Adharwadi Jail in Kalyan, former encounter specialist Ravindra Angre (52) was granted bail by the Thane sessions court on Wednesday.
Angre was arrested by the Shreenagar police on June 15 for firing at a Thane-based builder Mahesh Wagh (28).
Angre and the Waghs have a history of personal enmity. Wagh’s brother Ganesh (33) had first filed a complaint of extortion and assault against Angre with in 2007. He was arrested in 2008 and was released from Thane Central jail in 2009 after getting bail by the apex court on a bond of Rs 50,000.
“Wagh had said he was shot at with a revolver, which was found 10 days after the incident. Police seized a vehicle but are yet to prove its connection with my client. Five persons have told the police that Angre was with them at the time of the incident. His call records show that no calls were made or received during that one hour,” said Angre’s lawyer Anil Kanade.
“Police should have carried out proper investigations before arresting me. I’m a responsible police officer. Why would I go home and sleep after firing?... The morale of the state police has gone down. They are all under pressure and not ready to take risks,” said Angre.
