Around 800 motormen from the Central and Western railways are expected to participate in an indefinite hunger strike, starting 6 am.

What it means is that if a motorman falls ill or feels that he will not be able to drive the train any further, he will halt the train at the nearest station, sending the train schedule for a toss.

In a press release, the Western Railways have urged commuters to travel in local trains only if necessary as they expect services to be “severely affected” post-afternoon.

The BEST and the MSRTC will run additional buses to help deal with the situation. Close to 10,000 cops will be deployed across all railway stations.

Engine drivers of outstation trains may also participate.
