After searching in vain for his daughter, Ansari remembered the presence of a CCTV camera in the lane where she was last seen. The footage from the CCTV, attached to a mosque in the locality, confirmed Ansari’s worst fears: his daughter had been kidnapped by a teenager, who appeared to be about 15 years old.

The footage showed the boy tailing his daughter, and then luring her with a chocolate. At 8.27pm, the boy was seen pulling his daughter into a nearby lane.

Armed with this footage, Ansari approached the DN Nagar police station, but little information could be gathered about Kainat’s whereabouts.

“On Sunday morning, we approached the DN Nagar police and registered a kidnapping case. The CCTV footage was handed over to the police for investigations. We even circulated her photo on a social networking site,” said Ansari.

Police officers found Kainat crying inside the station premises, but with the child unable to tell them what had happened to her, they had to hand her over to the remand home in Mankhurd.

Ansari, meanwhile, had approached Versova, Juhu, Andheri and Vile Parle police stations, but in vain. On the third night, Ansari approached the Meghwadi police station, where an officer said he had heard a radio message from Borivli police station about a five-year-old girl being found at Borivli station on November 1.

Ansari rushed to Borivli station, where he was told his daughter was at a remand home in Mankhurd. “A police officer took us to the children’s remand home, where we identified Kainat,” said Ansari.
