Find baby or summon DGP again: Court

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday told the Mumbai police to trace the baby stolen in January from Lokmanya Tilak Hospital (Sion hospital), or get Director General of Police SS Virk to reappear before the court on September 14.

Noting Virk’s success in tracing a five-year-old boy kidnapped by his father, the division bench of Justice Bilal Nazki and Justice AR Joshi Justice said, “We are thankful to him. When you (police) put in sincere efforts, you find what you want.”

Mohini and Mohan Nerurkar had filed a habeas corpus (produce the person in court) petition in the HC after their three-day old son was stolen from Sion Hospital on January 1. The Nerurkars were represented by advocates Ashish Chavan and Amit Karkhanis.

“Nothing happened for nine months. But 10 days after we called the DGP, the child was found,” Justice Nazki said, referring to the Sujal Chhug case. “In each and every case (of missing children) we will have to call the DGP. He is anyway free from election duty.”

On Tuesday, Additional Public Prosecutor KV Saste told the court that the railway police had found an infant in a train at Bandra station. “We called the Nerurkars, but they couldn’t identify the baby, so we’ll conduct a DNA test,” said Saste. The HC has asked the police to conduct the test and submit the report.

K.K. Singhvi, counsel for the municipal corporation, which runs Sion hospital, told the court the civic body has implemented guidelines in civic hospitals to prevent a repeat. The HC had framed the guidelines on May 6.
