An inspection of Kenilworth mall, Bandra, by the fire department has revealed that though the complex is yet to adopt fire safety measures, its power supply has been restored without the civic body’s permission.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is seeking legal opinion on whether any action should be taken against the distributor, Reliance Energy.

A massive fire had broken out at the mall in July, exposing irregularities on the part of shop owners.

“Electricity has been restored to the mall without any clearance from the BMC. The mall still lacks fire safety equipment. Thus, we are seeking legal opinion on what action can be taken against the distributor, Reliance energy,” said a senior civic official.

Reliance Energy, however, said the supply was restored only to the unaffected areas of the premises, after inspection by relevant authorities.

“Reliance Energy has complied with all prevailing rules and regulations while restoring power supply to the unaffected areas of the said premises, after carrying out joint inspection with the public works department (PWD) authorities and subsequent clearance by them. The power supply to the fire-affected areas of the premises shall be restored only after receiving due clearances from the fire brigade and the PWD,” a spokesperson said.

In a letter dated August 29, of which HT has a copy, the civic body has asked Reliance Energy to immediately discontinue the power supply as the mall is still not following the required norms. The letter says the fire brigade should not be held responsible in case of any accident if the mall continues to flout rules.
