The cyber crime police station at Bandra-Kurla Complex on Saturday registered a first information report (FIR) against an unidentified person for spreading a false rumour about collapse of three supporting cables of the Bandra Worli sea link.
The rumour was spread through short messaging servic (SMS) and micro-blogging site, Twitter, on Wednesday at around 4.30pm.
After registering the FIR, the case was transferred to the cyber crime cell of the Mumbai crime branch. The police subsequently questioned Raj Kaushal, filmmaker and husband of actor and TV anchor Mandira Bedi, for spreading this rumour.
“Kaushal was called for questioning after which we let him go. We are verifying the statement given by him and if required, will call him again,” said Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime).
The Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) Limited, which constructed the sea link, filed the complaint under the Information Technology Act.
Kaushal was questioned as his name featured in the statement given by Harihar Iyer, assistant vice-president, HCC Limited. In his statement, Iyer said that on searching the Twitter site, the source of the tweet was traced to Kaushal’s profile. Iyer quoted the message posted on Twitter as, “Please avoid the Bandra-Worli sea link, three supporting cables have just collapsed. Worli Sea Face jammed”.
The case was registered under section 66(A)(a),(b),(c), which deals with sending offensive messages. The unidentified accused has been charged for causing fear and inconvenience to people by spreading this rumour using Twitter and defaming the company that constructed the sea link. If proved guilty, the accused could end up spending three years in prison and penalty up to Rs1 lakh.
