Her son Harsh had gotten a seat through the handicapped quota. Harsh does not have any disability and had applied for admission through the general category.

"Are we supposed to secure the handicapped seat or not?" she asked. "Has there been a mistake? Will they later ask us to show a handicapped certificate?"

She wasn't the only one fretting over this anomaly. At Sathaye College, the merit list was a jumble of students from all categories. "It was very difficult as there was no separation according to category so we had to sort it out ourselves," said Kavita Rege, the principal.

However, government officials explained that there was nothing irregular about students who applied through the general category being allocated a quota seat, and that they should not panic. "This has happened because there were leftover seats from the various quotas that got converted into general seats," said an education department official.

"We don't know how our marks have been considered because the SSC students have their marks out of 550 while we have it out of 500," said Daruwala.

Students thronged some colleges, as they wanted to see their names on the merit lists. "I came to Podar to check the list after the confusion when the vocational lists were released," said Devaki Dhamankar, who scored 93.82 per cent in the SSC exams.

Despite the confusion over the allotments this time, students and colleges didn't have a problem accessing the data online.

The lists were even available two hours ahead of the scheduled time of 5 pm.
