Fishermen await compensation

Despite an assurance from the Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh, fishermen affected due to the oil spill off the Mumbai coast following a collision between two merchant vessels in August last year, have not received any compensation from the state government, alleged the community body.

“A committee was formed to investigate the oil spill by former chief minister Ashok Chavan. The committee submitted a report asking the government to give the affected fishermen a compensation of Rs8.6 crore. However, nothing has been done,” said Akhil Maharashtra Machimar Kruti Samiti president, Damodar Tandel.

Meanwhile, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar assured the fishing community that he will write a letter to the Central government in this regard.
