Revised rates are applicable on only to the Central Railway’s food stalls, Jan Aahar cafeterias.

The rate hike is applicable on Mumbaiikars’ favourite food items including vada pav, samosa and pav bhaji.

Vada pav and samosas are now costlier by Rs2 each. The previous prices were Rs8 and 10, respectively. Medu vada is now priced at Rs12 after a hike of Rs2.

Revised rates of these food items are already in place. “Since February 21 revised rates of certain food items are under implementation,” said a central railway’s spokesperson.

Among the food items pav bhaji will now be the costliest as its rate has doubled to Rs30 from the earlier Rs15.

Non-vegetarian food items like egg curry and egg rice have also became dearer, with their prices being increased by Rs6 each. Earlier they used to cost Rs24.

Among juices, the price of neembu pani has been revised to Rs5 from Rs4. Prices of khaman dhokla, jalebi, puri have also been increased.

Passenger organisations did not oppose the hike, instead demanded quality food. “Nowadays, you won’t get a cup of tea for Rs 2 anywhere except railway stalls. So in these days of inflation, the price increase is acceptable. But we expect the railway to improve its food quality as well,” said Subhash Gupta, chairman, Yatri Pravasi Sangh .

The western railway has not revised their rates yet. On being contacted, the Western Railways spokesperson refused to comment.
