Four killed after SUV hits truck on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

Four people died and eight others were injured after their SUV crashed into a truck on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway 45km from Pune, around 5am on Saturday.

The police said the victims were residents of Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai and were on their way back to the city after attending a wedding at Latur, when the accident took place.

“The SUV’s driver, Shakil Faruque Biradar, tried to overtake the truck, but lost control and hit its rear. In the impact of the collision, four people died on the spot and the eight others in the vehicle were injured,” said MS Nimbarkar, assistant police inspector, Badgaon Mabal police station.

Some motorists informed the police control room and took the victims to Lokmanya hospital at Nigdi. The four dead were identified as Kasin Kader Patel, 76, Hamida Kasin Patel, 64, Farida Mujaber Patel, 35, and Irfan Ahmad Biradar, 12.

“Of the survivors, four had minor injuries and have been discharged. They went back to Latur,” Nimbarkar said. The others are still unconscious and in a critical condition, the doctors said.

“The driver was not drunk. We think he was sleepy as he had been driving for a long time. Speeding could have also caused the accident. We have not been able to take the driver’s statement as he is still unconscious,” Nimbarkar said.

The police sent the bodies to the Kamshet primary health centre for the post-mortem, the reports of which are yet to come.
