FSL still checking Vora’s phones: Police

The Mumbai police will not be able to put out the evidence they claim to have against journalist Jigna Vora till February this year. The reason: the Maharashtra Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), which is checking the contents of the seven mobile phones, hard disk, and laptop belonging to Vora, will be able to submit its report earliest by end of January.

Only after receiving the FSL report will the police be able to prepare and submit the supplementary charge sheet in the J Dey murder case.

The police are relying on the report to gather technical evidence against Vora, who they suspect had emailed Dey’s articles and his photographs to Chhota Rajan.

“Our new technology division is working on the exhibits. However, these tests are time consuming. It will at least take us three weeks to send the report to the police,” said an official from the Maharashtra FSL requesting anonymity.

The seven mobile phones sent to the FSL include three blackberry phones, an iPhone, a galaxy tab and a Nokia phone.

The official said the FSL might write to proprietors of Blackberry for help in retrieving deleted information.

The FSL official also said that the exhibits wouldn’t be sent to another laboratory outside the state. “We have the necessary technology to go ahead with the tests and the exhibits are still with us.”

The official added that Maharashtra FSL had conducted similar tests on mobile phones of Satish Kalia and Paulson Joseph, the other accused in the case, and sent the reports to the Mumbai police.
