Gang that steals cars from streets busted, one held

The Ghatkopar police, on Tuesday, arrested one member of this four-member gang. Police suspect they were involved in thefts of at least 20 four-wheelers in the city.

Acting on a tip off, the police arrested taxi driver Wahidali Khureshi, 25, a resident of Narayannagar in Ghatkopar. Khureshi along with three accomplices — Sarvar, Ibnain and Joseph — would steal cars and sell them in Uttar Pradesh.

“The gang would drive around in Khureshi’s taxi in the wee hours of the morning. The gang would look for new vehicles that fetch a better price,” said Rajkumar
Kothmire, police inspector at Ghatkopar police station. “The gang had a kit comprising tools to prepare duplicate keys. They would park the taxi alongside the vehicle and prepare the duplicate keys on the spot. Then, one of them would drive the vehicle away.”
