“If everyone in the government is getting free accommodation, why not for the police constables,” asked the Bombay High Court on Thursday.
It directed the state government to forthwith make available 300 tenements constructed by Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) for police personnel in Mumbai.
The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by a city-based NGO, Bhrashtachar Nirmulan Sanghatana raising issue of lack of residential quarters for most of the members of constabulary. In 2007, MHADA had agreed to construct 620 tenements for policemen in Low Income Group category, but two years later reduced the number to 300. But, even these tenements were not made available for the police personnel.
The court adjourned further hearing on the PIL for three weeks after directed the government to state what is being done to provide houses for police personnel, especially members of constabulary.
