Under its power generation capacity enhancement programme, the state government on Wednesday approved a new Rs 4,575 crore 1,220 Mega Watt gas-based project at Uran in Raigad district.
Currently, Maharashtra Power Generation Company (Mahagenco) has 852 MW installed capacity gas-fired plant in Uran, which gives state distribution a daily supply of 650 MW.
The company intends to complete the new project by 2012, the government’s deadline to make the state power surplus.
As of now, the state faces a daily shortage of 3000-3500 MW.
On Wednesday, the state Cabinet approved a financial plan for the project.
The 80 per cent of investment will be raised through loans from the World Bank and financial institutions in power sector. The government will contribute 20 per cent share.
Mahagenco spokesperson said the company would invite global tenders very soon. The project will operate on a modern multi-shaft advanced class gas turbine technology.
