A Gujarat-based businessman was arrested on charges of criminal intimidation following a complaint registered by a 22-year-old television actor, Rucha Ranawat.
The complainant, who is the second wife of the main accused Rajesh Patel who is still at large, approached the Juhu police and registered a case of cheating, breach of trust and physical and mental harassment against him and his two brothers-in-law on July 19.
The police said the accused Jagdish Patel, 37, was arrested from Dhanera district in Gujarat on Thursday and flown to the city. He was produced in the Andheri court on Friday and has been remanded in police custody. The police are also searching for Amrut Patel. Both Amrut and Jagdish are Rajesh’s brothers-in-law from his first marriage.
Sources said Jagdish is a relative of a Gujarat-based politician. The police said the main accused Rajesh, who too is a businessman from Gujarat and is married, used to often shuttle between Mumbai and Gujarat for business.
A few years ago, he met Ranawat, a resident of Vile Parle. “Rajesh hid the fact that he was married and married Ranawat in 2007 without divorcing his first wife,” said a police officer.
While Ranawat and Rajesh went to Gujarat about a year ago, the complainant learnt about his first marriage. When she reportedly confronted Rajesh, he started pressurising her to divorce him. “Jagdish and Amrut also learnt about their brother-in-law’s second marriage and started threatening to kill Ranawat if she did not divorce Rajesh. When matters got out of hand, the victim registered a complaint against the trio,” said senior police inspector Deepak Katkade of Juhu police station.
