Social worker Anna Hazare postponed his indefinite hunger strike on the issue of Lavasa lake city project and willful road toll collection in the state after Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan promised to appoint commissions to probe alleged irregularities. Hazare and environmentalist Medha Patkar met the chief minister at his official residence, Ramgiri, on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the issues.
According to Hazare, the CM agreed to appoint two separate commissions headed by retired high court judges to probe the illegal allotment of 145 hectares belonging to Krishna Valley Irrigation Project and 372 hectare of ceiling land to the developers of Lavasa city project. “We will give him three names of retired judges within a few days and he will select from them to head the commissions,” said Hazare.
During the discussion, the chief minister sought three months’ period to look after the matter for necessary steps. “As he has taken charge this month, we gave him three months’ period to take appropriate action on both issues,” added Hazare.
The Union environment and forest ministry has already slapped a show-cause notice on Lavasa Corporation for carrying out construction work without the ministry’s approval, Hazare pointed out.
The CM, however, was non-committal on setting up commission and made it clear that the government would fulfill only “possible” demands on both issues. “I told Anna that I have just taken reins of the state. So, give me some time to address the issue and he has finally agreed to give me three months’ period for taking necessary steps on both issues,” said Chavan.
