The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was pulled up on Thursday, by the Bombay High Court, for granting permissions to display posters and banners greeting political leaders on their birthdays.
“Is it covered under the definition of an event in concerned legislations?” the division bench of justice PB Majmudar and justice Amjad Sayed asked counsel for the civic body, Preeti Purandare.
The judges also expressed displeasure over lack of action against violators. “How many persons you have prosecuted, against how many persons you have issued notices to?” asked the judges. The court then directed BMC to submit a report stating how many prosecutions it had launched so far.
The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by city-based non-governmental organisation Janhit Manch raising concern about ever increasing number of illegal political banners, posters and hoardings and the lack of action against concerned persons.
