HC stays Marathi lessons in state’s non-SSC schools

The government resolutions (GRs), issued during the last two years, mandate that private unaided schools affiliated to non-state boards have to teach Marathi to primary school students, implement a curriculum prescribed by the state board for history and geography, and follow a three-language formula, with Marathi as the second language, for Class V to VIII.

Acting on a petition filed by the Unaided Schools Forum, which represents 139 institutions, a division bench of justices BH Marlapalle and Nishita Mhatre stayed the operation of the GRs noting their enforcement may amount to imposing additional conditions on such schools, which could hinder the enactment of the Right of Children to Free and Compul-sory Education Act, 2009.
