Heavy rain coupled with high tide led to waterlogging: BMC

Washing its hands off the havoc caused by last Saturday’s downpour, the civic body claimed that 99.53% of the nullahs in the city had been cleaned. More than 80 places had been waterlogged in last Saturday’s downpour, which the civic body blamed on the heavy rain, high tide and the fact that many of the areas were low-lying.

However, it has accepted that the reasons behind the traffic jams were potholes on the city’s roads. In a report submitted to the civic standing committee on Friday by Aseem Gupta, additional municipal commissioner, said that the city faced waterlogging because of heavy rains during high tide and also low lying areas.

Congress, the opposition party however disclaims his statement, saying that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) failed to complete the work of cleaning the nullahs. nullah-cleaning work.

“Not even 50% of the nullah cleaning work has been done after spending Rs 76 crore,” said Rajhans Singh, the opposition leader in the BMC.

He also alleged the BMC, and not the hat not Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) is solely responsible for waterlogging and traffic jams in the city.

Rahul Shewale chairman of the civic standing committee, defended the administration and said, “The cleaning work has been done.”

Meanwhile, municipal commissioner Subodh Kumar said that the reason behind the waterlogging was that the rain water could not recede due to some technical problem at the Irla pumping station.

“If the Irla pumping station was in working condition, the problem of waterlogging would not take place,” he said.
