High court upholds life term for cop’s son

Vaibhav Tijare, a first-year student of a local homeopathic medical college, killed his friend Mangesh Yede at their residence in service quarters on September 16, 2010. Tijare then hid the 9mm pistol, dumped the body in bushes outside their compound, cleaned the spot and washed the clothes he wore at the time of the incident.

Tijare maintained that Mangesh had misfired the service revolver and his death was accidental. Rejecting the defence, the Chandrapur trial court convicted him for killing Mangesh and sentenced him to life imprisonment on January 27, 2012. The court also convicted his friend Vishal Matte for helping him wipe out the evidence. Tijare’s lawyers argued that the prosecution had rested completely on circumstantial evidence. The division bench of justice AH Joshi and justice Sadhana Jadhav, however, discarded the contentions considering that he had tried to wipe out every possible trace of the incident.
