HSC exam results: Stellar show by repeat candidates boosts results

A good show by repeat candidates boosted the HSC results this year.

Interestingly, the result of new candidates increased by just 1% compared to 2014. It was the excellent performance of the repeat candidates that pushed up the overall passing percentages in the Mumbai division.

Of the 26,277 candidates that attempted the exam for the second time, 17,565 passed. The number of students who had appeared for the exam as private candidates by filling form 17 and those appearing for class improvement performed better than other candidates.

While last year, 29.45% repeat candidates in the state passed, this year the success rate is 46.69%.

Form 17 allows students who have not passed Class 11 to directly appear for HSC exams, while class improvement scheme was started by the board a few years ago to give students a chance to improve their scores.

Apart from pushing up the pass percentage, many of these students also excelled in their exams — 78 students got distinction, scoring above 75%; the number was 22 last year.

“Undoubtedly, the results have improved in the division this year because of repeat candidates,” said Laxmikant Pande, divisional chairperson of the board.

One of the reasons for the improved performance could be that the candidates were allowed to appear from the revised syllabus.

“There are several benefits of the syllabus including the new marking scheme of 80:20,” said Pande.
