The Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union (BUCTU) is the latest entrant in the fight for justice for Rohith Vemula, the research scholar who allegedly committed suicide owing to caste politics at the University of Hyderabad (UoH).

While students from across the country have shown solidarity for the cause, BUCTU has written to the government appealing for an impartial investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
“The academic community in Mumbai shares its shock and anguish with the rest of the nation on this incident. It is unfortunate that the suicide occurred in a premier university of the country,” said Madhu Paranjape, general secretary of BUCTU.
In three separate letters to the state governor, Ministry of human resource development and the minister of home affairs, BUCTU has supported the students of UoH protesting against the victimisation of dalit students.
“We urge the government to take appropriate steps to prevent recurrence of such incidents in universities,” stated the letter.
