IIT-B to award young alumni this year

And this year the institute will recognise the efforts of these young and talented people.

While the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) have always recognised the work of distinguished alumni, this year for the first time, they are instituting a

Young Alum Award on the institute’s Foundation Day on March 10.

“It is an award to recognise an alumnus or an alumna from the institute who has achieved extraordinary success and accomplishments in their respective fields at a very yo-ung age,” said IIT-B’s public relations officer, Jaya Joshi.

Among the awardees this year is, of course, Udaya Kumar who designed the new rupee symbol that India.

Kumar, now a faculty at IIT-Guwahati came up with the rupee symbol while in the hostel at IIT-B and applied for a competition floated by the finance ministry.

Joining the elite club is Pranav Mistry, a computer science and engineering student who did his masters in design from the Industrial Design Centre, IIT-B, in 2005 and went on to do his doctoral studies at MIT.

Mistry has now innovated devices such as a search engine that you can touch, fold and carry in your purse and a pen that draws three-dimensional images.

Others who will be awarded are Subhash Khot, an associate professor at the New York University who has contributing to computational compl-exity and Viral Acharya, a professor of finance from New York University.
