As a nurse, she worked for two decades, caring for people at SL Raheja Hospital, Mahim. When she died on Friday, her organs gave a new lease of life to three people with end-stage organ failure.

The Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) extended special permission to the hospital, which currently does not hold a licence to retrieve organs, to allow the nurse’s family to make the donation. The nurse’s donation came hours after a Navi Mumbai family donated organs of a 50-year-old woman, who like the nurse, suffered a stroke. This is Mumbai’s 16th cadaver donation this year, according to records maintained by ZTCC. Though the nurse’s family did not want to talk about the donation, sources at the hospital said they readily agree to donate her organs. The family consented to donate her heart, liver and kidneys.

Doctors found that her heart was not medically fit for transplant. However, her other organs were retrieved on Friday morning at the Mahim hospital. “She was brought to the hospital after she had a massive stroke. She was unconscious,” said Dr Ratnadeep Chaskar, zonal director, S L Raheja – A Fortis Associate Hospital.
