The Bombay High Court, had last month dismissed government orders capping fee hikes, ruling that the state will only be able to regulate fees if it came up with an act.

“We want a statutory committee to be set up to scrutinise the fee structure in private schools and we also want the government to come up with an act,” said MS Deshmukh, president of the Students’ Welfare Association, one of the organisations behind the protest.

“By asking parents not to send their children to school for two days we want to protest against the government, not against the schools.”

Apart from the Students’ Welfare Association, NGOs Sangharsh and the All Indian Federation of Parent-Teacher Associations will also participate.

The parents and activists plan to assemble at 6 am and then go from school to school distributing pamphlets and roses to urge those who have brought their children to school to protest as well.
