Prominent citizens including industry leaders are set to seek Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s intervention to put the Mumbai makeover plan on the fast track when he visits the city on August 18.

Under the umbrella of Mumbai First, an initiative of business houses which has been partnering with the government to transform Mumbai to a world-class city, Deepak Parekh of HDFC Bank, Noel Tata of the Tata Group, Anand Mahindra, chairman of Mahindra and Mahindra Group, Jaspal Bindra, Asia Pacific CEO of Standard Chartered Bank, and OP Bhatt, former chairman of State Bank of India, have sought an appointment with the prime minister to flag issues concerning the ambitious makeover project that was announced long ago, but is moving at a snail’s pace.

The appointment was sought through a letter sent to Singh on August 2 by Narinder Nayar, chairman of Mumbai First.

Sources in the government said that a meeting is likely to be set up between the corporates and the PM, but is not confirmed yet.
