An elaborate plan hatched by a police informer backfired terribly when his front man not only got arrested but also revealed his name during interrogation.
The Bandra police have arrested one Riyaz Kashmiri, 40. The mastermind of the plan, Afzal Khan alias Afzal Paani, has not been arrested as yet.
The accused have so far been booked under the Arms Act 1959. Depending on the investigation, they may be booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Kashmiri, a Mazagaon resident, had approached Khan a few weeks back for money to treat his ailing mother. Khan, sensing an opportunity, asked Kashmiri to deliver a revolver to ‘someone’ at Carter Road in Bandra (West).
“Khan, a police informer himself, asked one of his men to tip the police about Kashmiri,” said an officer from the Bandra police station on condition of anonymity.
Based on the tip-off, the Bandra police reached Carter road and arrested Kashmiri. Kashmiri had a revolver and bullet on him. “We also found a chit containing names of two people along with photographs of two other people,” said the officer from the Bandra police station. “Kashmiri confessed that he had been paid money by the two persons whose name was written on the chits we recovered from him. He claimed that he was asked by them to kill the two persons whose photographs he was carrying,” added the officer.
“Later, Kashmiri confessed that he had been instructed by Khan to carry the weapon and cook up the story of being a shooter. The reason behind the entire ‘act’ was to land the two people whose names were written on the chits in trouble. As per the plan, Kashmiri was to lead the police to the two persons, who reside in Kutch, where he would identify them as the ones who gave him the revolver and the contract to kill,” added the police officer.
