Inquire into alleged illegal detention: HC

Abhaychandra Yadav (28) had filed a petition alleging he was illegally detained by the Matunga police for over 20 hours from August 12, 2009, to August 13, 2009. The court has asked Padmanabham to expeditiously complete the inquiry against Senior Inspector Deshmukh and Sub Inspector Arjun Sawant.

Yadav contended in his petition that his office is located next to Tata Capital Ltd’s office. Tata Capital gives personal loans to buy motor vehicles.

On July 29, a group of men allegedly hired by Tata Capital confiscated a car belonging to Mohammed Ismail Hassan, saying he had not repaid the loan taken from the company. The company also intimated Antop Hill police station about this.

Hassan’s driver lodged a complaint of cheating against unkno-wn people at the Matunga police station, alleging they stole the car posing as Tata Capital officials.

Yadav has alleged that when he and his friend Yagnesh Bhatt went to the police station, Sawant began shouting at him, and beat him for “two to three minutes”. On seeing this, Bhatt fled. After a while, Deshmukh also questioned Yadav and slapped him, Yadav has alleged.
